The Back-End Lead Developer role is typically responsible for sculpting the architecture and strategy within our server side domain, as well as for managing a small team of engineers that work in that domain. They have expertise in all the fundamentals of software development, from problem exploration and solution discovery, through system and code design and implementation, to the deployment and maintenance of live code in a production environment. They use this knowledge and experience to lead their team through the design, development and maintenance of digital products and services. Whilst it’s important for the Lead Developer to have some involvement in the day to day work of software delivery, theirs is also a managerial and strategic planning role.

Back-End Leads have a good understanding of the business and customer value their software products deliver. They typically work closely with an Engineering Manager and Product Owners to maximise value and align with strategic business goals.

You’ll have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Engineering discipline or at least 10 years of general IT experience with a focus on software development
  • Typically, 10 years’ experience in systems development, implementation and operations.
  • Typically, 3 years’ experience in equivalent technology people leadership roles
  • In depth, expert knowledge of core areas required for the role, including Java, AWS or other cloud provider, Integration Patterns
  • Expertise with Java, Spring
  • Experience in Microservices, Serverless and Event driven architectures
  • Experience relational and non-relational databases such as MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis
  • Experience with Financial Services, PCI Compliance and ISO27001 highly advantageous
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platform(s) and tools
  • Familiarity with containerisation technology concepts, such as Docker
  • Demonstrated experiences with automation, virtualization & CI/CD Pipelines
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • A real passion for quality, clean code and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrable ability to motivate self and others, and a passion to mentor other developers
  • Experience working with technical and non-technical partners, with the capability to influence
  • A test and learn mindset with curiosity, collaboration and care.
  • Passionate, empathetic people manager, with genuine care for the well-being of their team members.
